My path into Acacia, ironically, goes through Alpha Chi Rho. The first weekend of freshman year, in a drunken debacle, I rambled home after some drinks at a house party and Crow, to my RA, Ben Peskin. The next morning, after I had enjoyed a peaceful, peaceful sleep, he wasn’t there to bust me for obvious drinking. He wanted to see if I was okay. That was my first glimpse of the Acacia Factor. My second was when I was invited to the house for a social night. I met Brian Chen and Jason Ho there. As the night neared an end, and me and Ben got ready to go, Brian and J-Ho said they were making food. J-Ho made some noodles, and we all ate and talked. I already felt at home among these fine gentlemen.

Acacia, I feel, has always been a fraternity for people who didn’t want to join a “frat”. It’s a place for people who aren’t afraid to be themselves, and to help people not be afraid to be themselves. It’s the honesty and integrity of the brothers that brings us together. It should be the foundation of nations, and not just one house on one university campus.

MANNY MOCK
Roll: 635
Major: Marketing and Accounting
Graduating: Spring ‘09

What ACACIA means to me:
ACACIA represents a strong brotherhood in which an individual can feel
comfortable in. ACACIA is second family outside of home and it feels great to
just be at the house to be away from the harsh society that surrounds Syracuse
University. ACACIA is a place where one can let go of worries and stress and
be themselves. All in all, ACACIA is a botherhood that pushes everyone
towards success.

What ACACIA did for me:
ACACIA has opened doors to meeting new people. By meeting the people in ACACIA
has allowed me to connect with their friends and friends of friends. ACACIA
has taught me to be strong and continue striving for dreams. My mind has
strengthened by being apart of ACACIA and I have grown tremendously over the
course of a year by being a member of ACACIA. Good things are expected to
continue. DO GOOD!

DHAVAL SHAH
Senior Steward

Roll: 638
Major: International Relations and Economics
Graduating: Fall ‘08
Nickname: Flounder/Luigi
Favorite Hobby: Attempting to draw
Why I joined:
I joined Acacia because to me it was the only place on campus to interact with people who are different from you. Plus, there is no greater escape then coming to the house and hanging out with some of the coolest people I’ve ever met.
What Acacia has done for me:
Even though I’ve only been an active for such a short time, already Acacia has done so much for me. It has given me the confidence to become a better leader, and has given me the chance to do things for the community.

QUOC TUAN NGUYEN
Treasurer

Roll: 639
Major: Accounting (CPA) and Finance
Nickname: Dirtbag, Croc
Hobbies: Baseball, Football, eating and watching the Food Network
Why and What:
High school was a great experience for me. I didn’t have lots and lots of friends, but I had a really close group of friends. When I came to Syracuse, it was a completely different story. I wasn’t able to relate to anybody on my floor my freshman year. I really wanted to transfer to a school closer to home. This all changed once I joined Acacia. Acacia is truly my home away from home. To me, Acacia is more than just a fraternity and lots of parties. Acacia is playing Madden with Joe until 5 in the morning, telling Pablo he has no soul because he’s a Yankees’ fan, or playing a game of football in the blistering cold on a snowy driveway with all of my brothers. Acacia is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

MARCUS LEE
Secretary

Roll: 640
Graduating: Spring ‘09
Major: Computer Art
Nickname:Creep, Cruss, Crotch

What Acacia means to me: It is like my second home (besides my current
residence) here. It is a place where I can hang out and chillax with
my bros. We do lots of fun activities (besides partying)
and I believe I made an excellent decision to pledge for Acacia.

THOMAS MATHAI
IFC GAME Chair

Roll: 641
Major: Psychology and Finance
Graduating: Spring ‘10
Nickname: NATO/Mario
Favorite Hobbies: Tennis, going to SU basketball games, wearing ridiculously
puffy coats, not being able to swim
why and what?: When I came to Syracuse I made friends; when I pledged Acacia, I found a
family. These guys truly are my brothers and I love them. We have so much
fun together and there is nobody I would rather spend my four years here with
(except maybe Lisa, she is awesome). Acacia love.

MATTHEW HAGERTY
Venerable Dean

Roll: 645
Hometown: Wayne, PA
Graduating: Spring ‘10
Nickname: Gerty
Major: History and Secondary Education
What Attracted me to Acacia: What attracted me to Acacia was the
diversity of the brothers in it, the dedication to community service,
and the immense ability to have fun responsibly. Their is also a
strong presence of academics in Acacia, and I believe this mix of
attributes makes Acacia the best that there is.
Hobbies: Singing (preferably randomly, because I want it that way),
throwing dance parties, laughing, and learning.
Interesting Fact:I love the game of Diplomacy.

TYLER CHU
Community Service Chair

Roll: 646
Hometown: Hong Kong
Graduating: Spring ‘10
Major: Marketing… (may be) accounting
What attracted me to Acacia: It is my first year in SU, the fourth year in
the states for education and I feel that my social life is limited within
the Asian community, especially people from Hong Kong. I decided to make some
changes, meet more people and experience more of college and Greek life. I
heard from Tricia and Ronald that Acacia is a fraternity that kind of
in everything, which will provide me more chances to meet people and
this attracted me. More importantly, I have faith in my friends and thats what Acacia is all about.
Hobbies:Basketball, tennis, golf, photography, sleep
An Interesting Fact (or two): I loved to take pictures since I was
twelve. I carry my camera all the time. I consider myself as an art
student since then; however, when I turn to sixteen, I quitted
photography. The education system in Hong Kong forced me to quit
photography because there weren’t any art schools and I couldn’t make
a living as a photographer. Since then, I completely forgot about
photography. Four years later, at the first day I arrived at my
boarding high school in Boston, photography found me again. Then, I
became a fanatical photographer. I spent fifty percent of my time
taking pictures and twenty percent of my time in the dark room. I
lived thought my high school life like that and decided my major will
be photography. Hence, I applied to most of the art school and a few
university like SU that I have a strong program in business and
photography with a few certificates from some photography contest.
Unfortunately, neither the art school nor university enrolled my as an
art student. At the moment, I realized that I had to let photography
go away for a few years, may be another four “magic” years. However,
Bro. Mike Ho inspired me one Sunday, I could hold on to my dream job,
by encouraging me to strive for my own photography shows or studio.

JEFFREY ZHONG
Risk Manager

Roll: 647
Hometown: New York City
Graduating: Spring ‘10
Majors: Accounting and Finance or Management
What attracted me to Acacia: This is the fourth year I have lived and
studied in the states. I find that I am not totally immersed into
American culture. Most of my friends are Asians and I think it is time to
know other people besides Asians. I also want to experience the Greek
life and brotherhood. Since I was a kid, I always wished I would have
a brother or sister. Sometimes I feel lonely when I am at home because
I am the only child in my family. I want to have someone to share my
happiness and my sadness and have someone I can totally
trust. Acacia is a very diverse fraternity with people
of different colors and different perspectives.
Also, Acacia is not only a party fraternity; it has an outstanding academic
record and reputation in Syracuse University. It also provides many opportunities
for helping the community.
Hobbies:Basketball, Video Games, Reading, Cooking, shopping for
limited edition clothing.
An Interesting Fact (or two):When I was a student in forth grade in
Hong Kong, I became a basketball player on the school team. At the
same time, I liked watching the NBA on television if I had time. I had
a silly thought that I would become a NBA player in the future. I
spent so much time on the basketball court every day. However, I
found it may be just a dream because I am not tall
enough to play in NBA.
Basketball is one of my favorite hobbies because when I
play, my mind concentrates and I play hard to beat
other team on the court. Basketball reflects my hardworking attitude:
how I always want to win and I do my best to accomplish my goals.

PAUL HODUM
Abroad in Santiago, Chile

Roll: 648
Hometown: Port Jefferson NY, Long Island
Graduating: Spring ‘10
Major: International Relations
What attracted me to Acacia: The brother are a unique group of people that are aware of the global community and also know how to take it easy with the weekend comes around. Being able to say your a brother of Acacia means that your a gentleman. I was weary of the other frats do to the lack of fraternity within the house and seeing that being a brother means being in a family rather than having a title in Acacia means a lot to me.
Hobbies:I play soccer, tennis, rock climb, and wont shy away from any form of competition.
An Interesting Fact (or two): I speak spanish fluently and have family in Valencia Spain. I am also a HARDCORE fanatic about soccer.

ZACHARY RAYMOND KING
Roll: 650
Hometown: Old Forge (ADK Mts.), New York
Graduating: Spring ‘08
Major: Biotechnology
Why did I pledge? Acacia is the true representation of brotherhood. The fraternity gentlemen are willing to lend a hand to all in need and instantly welcomed me from the start. They foster the belief of “Human Service” to the greater public, one another and themselves. Not to mention, they know how to kick back and relax. I feel as though when I am around their house I get a positive energy of intelligence and friendship. If you ask the general Syracuse public about SyrAcacians the answers you receive is encouragement enough to walk yourself to their house and meet some of our generations most diverse, intelligent, and successful gentlemen.
Hobbies: SUSRC (SU Ski Team), eating fruity pebbles, slaying invasive species, Bio-ethics Society, & the great Outdoors
An Interesting Fact (or two): Ladies… single, I am a SCUBA Master, & determination drives all that I do.

Why’d I pledge? Jordan Rennert, whom I met in Spain, suggested I swing by his fraternity some time and meet a few of the brothers. I did so, and was surprised to meet an entire fraternity of people I enjoyed being around. And so, after a little cojoling, I decided to give pledging a shot. It was something I never would have considered before meeting the gentlemen of Acacia.
Hobbies:Music, Writing, Reading
An Interesting Fact (or two): I once spent a week at girl scout camp when I was five years old

LOUIS SANTORO

Why and What?:
I joined Acacia fraternity because one of my best
friends, Manny Mock, was interested in joining at the
time and I personally feel that good friends join
similar organizations together because they have to
look out for one another. Manny introduced me to some
of the Suave looking brothers and immediately it was
love at first sight. Not only with the brothers but
also with the Acacia Brotherhood. I first met
brother’s Wang and Smith at the Fall 2005 Fraternity
Expo in the Schine Center. Winston Wang was very
informative and touched my shoulder a lot but
immediately I knew he was a genuine person. Rob
Smith, on the other hand, was very articulate with his
words of wisdom about the fraternity and even to this
day he is one of my biggest role models in and out of
the fraternity. I’m extremely lucky to have Rob Smith
as a Big Brother. Acacia Fraternity has helped me
grow as an individual. The Acacian brotherhood has
been and will continue to be one of the best
experiences of my college career. Proud to be an
Acacian!

CHARLES R. CUTSHALL III
Senior Dean - Spring ‘07, Junior Dean - Fall ‘06

Roll: 624
Major: International Relations

Favorite Hobby: Basketball! Except with red cups instead of hoops and ping-pong balls instead of basketballs.

Why did you join Acacia and What has it done for you:
Syracuse University has a diverse student body that is unfortunately
represented in only a handful of organizations on campus. ACACIA
Fraternity is one of these organizations. I joined ACACIA at the
onset of it’s return to the university in the spring of 2005. Since
my initiation I have been involved from abroad and at home as the
fraternity has blossomed and grown into the success that it is today.
Serving as the Junior Dean (Social Chair) as well as the Senior Dean (Pledge Trainer) I have had the opportunity to help shape and give direction to the fraternity. In addition, I have learned how to live, work and study with a group of gentlemen coming from diverse backgrounds, with different interests, and an expanse of possible futures. With the brotherhood currently 21 strong and soon to take on a new pledge class I am excited about what lay install for the soon to be pledges, brothers as well as the university as ACACIA continues to grow and garner more respect and influence in the community.

I joined Acacia because Acacia is a very special place for me to seek
for growth. I want to be a well-rounded person, and Acacia provides
such a great chance for me to fulfill myself. Also, many brothers
around me demonstrate such quality to me, and I feel this is a right
place for me to stay and form a bond with them.

JORDAN RENNERT
Community Service Chair - Spring ‘07

Roll: 627
Major: Television, Radio and Film

Favorite Hobby: Jumpkicking
I joined Acacia because after meeting the brothers I knew there was something special here. And an organization whose motto is human service can’t really be… bad can it?. Turns out joining was the best decision I made during my four years here. And like the brotherhood, a lot of my own growth I owe to this fraternity, as its ideals and members make me want and work towards becoming a stronger and more mature human being. Great.

ROBERT SMITH
former VD ‘06-Spring ‘07

Roll: 630
Graduating: Fall ‘07
Major: Advertising
Nickname: Bobert
Favorite Hobby: Watching bad movies
Why and what?: I actually joined Acacia as a result of the annual hypnotist event that the fraternity puts on. I was convinced to go by some friends on a lark, and found that I enjoyed the show, and that I wanted to learn a little bit more about the guys that were behind it. I took some promotional materials and visited the house, and as soon as I did I noticed something very different and special about the people that I came into contact with. I had always had a desire to join a fraternity, but I didn’t want to compromise who I am in order to do so, and I quickly found that with Acacia I didn’t have to do that. What Acacia has done for me is introduced me to a quality of people I did not expect to find on this campus, provided a place where I can completely be myself, and given me a brotherhood that I truly believe will last far beyond my college years.

Why did you join ACACIA and what has it done for you?: I joined
ACACIA because of the people. I never expected to meet a better group of guys or thought that they could become a part of my family, but I was wrong on both counts. The sense of belonging and comraderie has been absolutely unparalleled by anything else in my college career.
ACACIA has been my support structure, social center and overall family from the beginning. Joining was, hands down, the best decision I have made during the past four years.
