Greek or Treat

A few brothers helped a lot of kids have a good time this Monday at the Greek-or-Treat. While the more appropriate title might be the Greek-and-Treat, since there was not much of an option, nonetheless fun was had by all.

Underprivileged children from across Syracuse were brought to Walnut Avenue, where the majority the large greek houses on campus reside. The children were led in groups by greek volunteers as well as volunteers from within their respective communities.

Matt Hagerty was the lone brother from Acacia who helped Pi Beta Phi run their activity for the children. Rohan Akhouri, Louis Santoro and Derek Li helped lead the groups of costumed children from house to house.

Greek-or-Treat is an event run by the greek community in conjunction with several schools and organizations in the Syracuse area. The symbiotic relationship helps the greeks to better serve the community.

Alumni Reunion 2007

The alumni reunion went well.

The alumni who were able to come to Syracuse for the reunion came to the house and had breakfast with a number of the actives. The House Corp held a meeting as well, and resolved to move for a new house at 781 Ostrom or remain in 909 Comstock depending on the number of brothers willing to commit to living in the house.

Some of the alumni brothers who attended Reunion also went to the football game, which Syracuse actually won. Following that, the dinner at the Marriot near Carrier Circle was pretty delicious.

For those we didn’t see this year, we hope to see you next year so that we might strengthen the ties of friendship.

Acacia’s big Saturday - follow-up

UPDATE!
Dollar Day at the Dome was a big success! A combination of backflips and the pervasive Acacia factor were the key to Acacia’s, and by extension the United Way’s, success on this day. Mountaineers and Orange fans donated alike, and a great time was had by all. Human service!

Brother Mock placed third in the hot-dog eating contest, eating nine whole hot dogs in eight minutes. The winner was a brother from Alpha Epsilon Phi, who tied with a brother from Sigma Alpha Mu at the end of regulation time (eight minutes) at 15 hot dogs each. The winner ate three more hot dogs to the runner-up’s two in the two-minute overtime. Brother Mock acquitted himself honourably as he tried to find a winning technique. There was nobody close to Mock, as some contestants only made it to six hot dogs. After the women’s event, Brothers Rohan Akhouri, Derek Li, and another brother from Alpha Chi Rho participated in a five-minute competition for fun. Brother Li emerged victorious at four and a half hot dogs at the end of regulation time, while Crow finished at four, and Akhouri finished with a measly three and a quarter (which he insists was three and a half). A good time was had by all, and certainly hot dogs were had by some.

The Latino Step Competition was exciting and a good experience for the brothers who managed to show up. Notably in attendance also was Ken Smith, who was given a bid to pledge Acacia today as well, and accepted. He will be duly pledged on Sunday. He expressed his excitement to join Acacia, and demonstrated his eagerness by buying a formal outfit for his pledging ceremony. As for the competition, some sisters from Sigma Lambda Upsilon blew us away with their sharp routine. The brothers of Lambda Sigma Upsilon impressed as well, performing twice to warm receptions both times.

Acacia’s big Saturday

On Saturday, October 6, Acacia Fraternity plans to get out and about in the community and do some good. More updates will come Saturday night, but the itinerary so far is:

9:30 PM - Louis Santoro leads Dhaval Shah, Ben Peskin, Thomas Mathai and Derek Li in a quest for dollars at Dollar Day at the Dome. The brothers will be among 150-200 other Greeks, according to SU News, and proceeds from the event will go to CNY’s United Way.

4:00 PM - Brother Emmanuel Mock will participate in Alpha Tau Omega’s hot-dog eating contest. His entry fee of $50 was subsidized by several of the brothers. Proceeds will go towards fighting hunger…just kidding. Proceeds will go towards the ALS Association, which is dedicated to educating people about and fighting ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. One of their brothers had been diagnosed with the disease. The brothers of Acacia plan to go and support Manolo in his gastronomical endeavour.

6:30 PM - Acacia is out in force to support the Latino Greek Council and the chapters associated with it. The Latino Step Show goes down at 6:30 and the brothers will be there to be entertained. What is step? Your answer lies here.

Updates to come!
