Spotlight on Brother Joseph Alvarado

Bro. Alvarado is Acacia’s nomination
for Greek Man of the Year. Congrats Joe!!
Dear Selection Committee:
To all who have met him Joseph Alvarado is an unforgettable character. If it is not his kindness and or generosity that keeps him everlasting in the thoughts and minds of those with whom he comes into contact, then it is bound to be his ability to listen, understand, and react to the needs of others.
I have known Joseph for upwards of two years and each day that has passed has been without a doubt a privilege and an honor. We have lived together, we have studied together, we have laughed and cried together and at no point have I ever doubted the sincerity of his character. He has always been willing to take a break and listen when someone need to say something and go out of his way when a friend was in need.
Understanding that Syracuse University is a place not only for scholarly achievement Joseph has entered into and influenced the workings of countless student organizations and university programs, all while maintaining a 3.6 grade point average. He has served on the executive board of Acacia fraternity and has provided unmatched guidance and support as the fraternity has doubled in size. An integral part of Alpha Phi Omega (APO), a community service based fraternity, he played a key role in the preparations for this years Relay for Life. In addition to his fraternal commitments, he volunteers his time driving students tutors to surrounding Syracuse schools and this year gave up his spring break to habitat for humanity.
Consistently setting an example for others to follow Joseph Alvarado is warranted the respected that he receives from his peers, however, it is those that know him best that understand just how extraordinary of an individual he truly is. Living across the hallway I hear him call home every night to ask how his mother is doing. This past semester she was diagnosed as being terminally ill with cancer. As he has battled with the possibility of losing his mother, he has time and again set an example for others to follow, rising to meet the needs of others and serve the community.
Acacia Fraternity is proud of its brother, Joseph Alvarado, and wishes him well with whatever fortune he may find following graduation. Your presence around the house and in our day-to-day lives will be greatly missed.
Fraternally,

Brother Louis Santoro is now the GAME (Greeks Advocating Multicultural Education) chair for the IFC. Bro. Santoro was elected in unanimously after a dynamic presentation. This marks the FIRST time since Syracuse ACACIA’s recolonization that a brother has served on the IFC executive board.

Congrats Louis…you the man.
When asked about his new position, Bro. Santoro had this to say:
No comments“Without the support of Bros Smith, Halverson, Akhouri, Mock, and some of the other Acacia brothers, my new position in the IFC may never have happened. I give 99% of the credit to the Good Looking guys that have whispered the secret words, “RESPECT!”"

Chili and Human Service
On February 11th, the brothers of Acacia donated their hands, their time and their tongues, as Bro. Akhouri, Bro. Lee, Bro. Mock and Bro. Rennert volunteered to help the Thornden Park Association put on their annual Chili Fest. Hundreds of community members came from far and wide to sample the best chili Syracuse had to offer. Running the raffle, serving chili to hungry customers, playing toss the Giant Chili pepper with neighborhood kids and cleaning up the Thornden Park Community Center made the five hours the brothers spent helping whiz by.

Bro. Akhouri helping run the raffle where the first prize
winner took home the beautiful chili themed quilt behind him.
When it was all said and done, the brothers were driven back to 909 Comstock by a grateful member of the Thornden Park Association and pleasantly forced to put 5 containers of Chili into the refrigerator at 909 Comstock. Not surprisingly, the next week was a delicious one.
Outside Bro. Rennert, Bro. Lee and Bro. Mock made a new friendin the form of a giant red stuffed chili.
